Subject: America Meditates

Jai Gurudev!

On October 12th, over 30 cities in Latin American hosted America Meditates, the
largest collective meditation to take place in this continent.
Thousands of people came together to celebrate in love and peace to create a
stress-free society and focusing on the creation of a non-violent world.
In Buenos Aires, over three thousand sat in silence, chanted AUM, and sang Om
Namoh Bhagavate. The event, which took place in a major public park, was hosted
by local Art of Living teachers and volunteers and included guest speaker Rabi
Sergio Bergman. Over one thousand came together in Rio, Brasil, and many
hundreads gathered in over thirty cities around the continent. It was, indeed,
a beautiful event, full of grace and gratitude.

Subject: Kurnool Experience

Hi,

Last week I happened to be in Kurnool, one of the cities which has witnessed
the worst floods in its history. I was part of the 'Art of Living' -
Hyderabad Volunteers team. I just thought of sharing the experiences which me
and our team had during these two days of volunteering in Kurnool. Please
spend some time to go through the mail completely.

Saturday, we all started by early morning and headed towards Kurnool via
NH7.When we neared the city, our bus was welcomed by a broken bridge. One half
of the bridge was functioning and other half had been broken due to flood
waters. There was a very big queue of buses, trucks and vans before us waiting
for their turn to enter the bridge. Traffic police have planned it
Like, vehicles towards the city will be allowed for half-an-hour and then
vehicles from the city will be allowed to cross the bridge the next
half-an-hour. We managed somehow to cross our first hurdle after a long
wait. (This bridge is being re-constructed now).

On our way in, we saw lot of destroyed grain fields, houses, electric poles and
other properties. We reached the city by noon and when we started working..,
our first task was to clean a street, in a low-lying area near the banks of
river Tungabhadra. The residents there say that water was standing up to
height of two floors and it took at least one and half days for it to come
down.

The streets were filled with mud till knee level, which has made walking in
the streets almost impossible. We used gumboots to cross the mud. Our captain
Mr. Srinivasa Rao was ready waiting there, with the equipments for us. We used
the shovels and some kind of spears provided, to pile up the mud, which was
cleaned up using the JCB machines, which is usually in building
constructions.

Sounds easy uhh...I bet you can not imagine the scenario there. It was mud
all over there, mixed with black cotton soil carried away from river beds and
drainage, with foul smell. Even face masks looked useless. After sometime we
got used to that environment and got involved in cleaning.

There were some paid workers (villagers from nearby locations) cleaning a
temple. Me and part of our team joined them. Since they are anyway paid for
the work, their progress was slow...Our group joined hands with them and
speeded up the process. Even after the villagers left the scene, we strived
hard to do our portion in that mammoth task till later part of the evening.

On the second day, our volunteers took up one more temple and cleaned
it...the task which looked hard initially reached the finishing stage by the
end of the day, because of undying spirit of our AOL team...That day, I was
part of the medical camp...Two Doctors who joined us in the trip treated
more than 500+ people in these two days...Many of patients had cut wounds
and body pain...proper dressing was done to them...also TT shots /
antibiotic injection were given to patients who needed those..

Many organizations which arrived there, with the banner of relief camps
parked their vehicles well ahead of affected regions, took a few snaps from a
distance and have left the place. Even the local residents are fleeing to
less affected part of the city, as there is no electricity in the low lying
regions...This is the scenario on the sixth day after the floods...There was
very less government servants working on these regions. (Some police was
helping in cleaning the houses)

Yes, there are many forms of fund raising activities being done in various
parts of country, for flood relief....but, will just money help...? There are
people donating medical aid for affected people...Is that enough...? There
are people donating blankets and clothes to victims...are they reaching to
needy...?

Every one should think about this...I personally saw people running behind
every lorry/truck that entered their streets, expecting some sort of relief
material. The drinking water is contaminated. ..people are given water
pockets...There is a big fight for that..Will it quench the thirst of their
family..forget about the family..It will not even help them.

Many houses are full of mud and waste...there is no possibility of
cooking...People are given food parcels and rice...Again there is a big
street fight for this. When one rice bag fall down from the hands due to
rush, the lady who carried it picked up all the grains from the mud and left
home...Such desperate they are..

Not just water and food packets..(I don't mean, that they will not serve the
purpose..for sure they will)..But what they really need back is their
'Normal Life' back. 'Art of Living' volunteers did their part, keeping this
in
mind. The bottom line is the current situation demands many bodily abled
volunteers to do the field work...

If we all think to act, we can bring the light in their home and smiles back
in to their faces. Let this Diwali find them in Joy. Jai Gurudev!

Regards,
Thirumeni

Sri Sri goes with a human touch and a decisive methodology of 'humaneness'

UNI

At the height of Naxal terror a diminutive man is trying to make inroads to
break the strongholds of the extremists by treading at variance with the
bullet-for-bullet approach.

He goes with a human touch and a decisive methodology of 'humaneness' to change
the hearts and minds convinced that 'men are not stones' and even stones
can change. In the rampant violence-stricken areas of Jharkhand he has made but
a small dent by getting some Maoists to give up arms. Post reform they have
floated a party- Jharkhand Vikas Party (JVP) - all set to contest the next
elections convinced of the supremacy of the ballot over bullet. He says among
the reformed is a commander who has a large following and this could be a
beginning.

This is just a small step for Sri Sri Ravishankar, Founder of the Art of Living
Foundation, who has already made many a stride in crisis-affected areas
elsewhere. He says he rushes to conflict areas 'following his heart' convinced
that there 'is a Balmiki in every daku' and he can contribute to peace
efforts and trauma relief.

"Wake Up & Shake Up" - A Grand Success At Kota

The long awaited wish of the AOL family of Kota came was fulfilled on Sunday
,i.e, 11.10.09. The "Wake Up & Shake Up" workshop by Shri Mahesh GiriJi was
held at Kota.

It was a grand success with over 800 people taking part in it. Participants
from all over Rajasthan and even from other states came to take part in it.

The common experience of all the participants was that the day should never
end.All the people who met Mahesh Bhaiya for the first time were spellbound by
meeting him and all the things heard about him became so small after spending
the whole day with him.

The effect of the charismatic personality of Mahesh Bhaiya was so that
everyone whether young or old was giving their 100% in the workshop despite it
being a very hot day. Everyone forgot their thirst & hunger as Bhaiya came at
the venue. The mere entrance of Bhaiya was so great & energetic that everyone
was just admiring him with the thought in their hearts that we have to go
through the workshop in such a way that after the completion Bhaiya should
himself want to come to Kota again and again.

The success of the workshop was also published in few of the daily newspapers
published in Kota. The news releases are attached.

After the workshop, everyone here at Kota is committed to make the Mega Part-I
Course to be taken by Mahesh Bhaiya from 30.10.09 to 01.11.09, the most
successful Part-I Course taken by Bhaiya till now, alongwith the hope that our
beloved Guruji will soon come to Kota.

JAI GURUDEV!!
