Dear Friends,
As the year wraps up, I am remembering how the notion of tithing has come up
several times when we have discussed moving our programs forward to reach
more and more people. While outreach and program development are a huge part
of expanding our impact, seeding our programs each year with donations can
change the game in terms of how our leaders plan investments for the coming
year. Imagine the changes we might make for Project Welcome Home Troops, for
example, if all of a sudden the balance of funds were to double. I don't
think it would be very hard for us to double the budgets that our projects
are working with...if we each consider increasing our giving to a full 10%
of our income, and not just this one time, but on an annual basis. I'm sure
many of us are already doing this...not to mention all the other ways that
we all give, but I still thought it is worth sharing this with you.
As I have shared previously, making this commitment on an ongoing basis
creates a shift in how we think about giving. Instead of thinking "how much
should I give"..."will it be used effectively"..."why aren't others giving
more"...it becomes a simple and joyous process of allocating a set amount of
money across the projects we are most inspired by. Let's say we make $50,000
in the year...then we know we have $5,000 to give. After adding up all the
other donations made during the year till now...perhaps there is still a
ways to go to reach that $5,000. Whatever this amount is - just being
committed to that...without attachment or doership, but from a pure space of
giving, abundance, and gratitude.
In terms of impact...let's imagine there are just 1,000 of us in the US that
have an average income of $100,000 (some may make $30,000...some may make
$300,000) and we all commit to giving 10% each year. That would mean
$10,000,000 per year flooding into the various projects we run without
overburdening anybody. Think of all the work that goes into just one of our
large events where we might raise $1,000,000 - this is 10x that amount on an
annual basis without any incremental work! With these funds, we could open
10x new centers, hire 10x more full time staff/teachers, spend 10x more on
outreach, teach 10x more high school students, or increase spend in any
other way that will help our programs reach more people. Also, now, instead
of us thinking that we are asked so many times to donate (I hear this
sometimes) - we think how we are given so many options with which to
allocate our 10% during each year. We already know we will give 10%.
Jameelah and I have enjoyed this shift in giving, and we just wrapped up our
giving for 2012 in support of some programs that we see are really active
and making an impact. In these times, it is even more important that we
commit to expanding our programs through all the means at our disposal -
including giving.

Subject: giving in 2012...tithing...and creating a stress free violence free
society
Dear Friends,
As the year wraps up, I am remembering how the notion of tithing has come up
several times when we have discussed moving our programs forward to reach
more and more people. While outreach and program development are a huge part
of expanding our impact, seeding our programs each year with donations can
change the game in terms of how our leaders plan investments for the coming
year. Imagine the changes we might make for Project Welcome Home Troops, for
example, if all of a sudden the balance of funds were to double. I don't
think it would be very hard for us to double the budgets that our projects
are working with...if we each consider increasing our giving to a full 10%
of our income, and not just this one time, but on an annual basis. I'm sure
many of us are already doing this...not to mention all the other ways that
we all give, but I still thought it is worth sharing this with you.
As I have shared previously, making this commitment on an ongoing basis
creates a shift in how we think about giving. Instead of thinking "how much
should I give"..."will it be used effectively"..."why aren't others giving
more"...it becomes a simple and joyous process of allocating a set amount of
money across the projects we are most inspired by. Let's say we make $50,000
in the year...then we know we have $5,000 to give. After adding up all the
other donations made during the year till now...perhaps there is still a
ways to go to reach that $5,000. Whatever this amount is - just being
committed to that...without attachment or doership, but from a pure space of
giving, abundance, and gratitude.
In terms of impact...let's imagine there are just 1,000 of us in the US that
have an average income of $100,000 (some may make $30,000...some may make
$300,000) and we all commit to giving 10% each year. That would mean
$10,000,000 per year flooding into the various projects we run without
overburdening anybody. Think of all the work that goes into just one of our
large events where we might raise $1,000,000 - this is 10x that amount on an
annual basis without any incremental work! With these funds, we could open
10x new centers, hire 10x more full time staff/teachers, spend 10x more on
outreach, teach 10x more high school students, or increase spend in any
other way that will help our programs reach more people. Also, now, instead
of us thinking that we are asked so many times to donate (I hear this
sometimes) - we think how we are given so many options with which to
allocate our 10% during each year. We already know we will give 10%.
Jameelah and I have enjoyed this shift in giving, and we just wrapped up our
giving for 2012 in support of some programs that we see are really active
and making an impact. In these times, it is even more important that we
commit to expanding our programs through all the means at our disposal -
including giving.

Our beloved Guruji says "Our first and foremost commitment is to do seva
(service) in the world and be grateful for any opportunity to do the seva."
One of the projects run by Art of Living is providing good quality education
to transform tribes. Sri Sri Vidya Mandir (School project in Ghatshila) is
growing leaps and bounds and as many as 3,000 children are benefited by way
of free education and allied factors.
About 23 students & 5 staff members of this school would be visiting Pune
from 13th-17th January 2013.
These children have prepared enthusiastically to present their skills here.
All are requested to encourage them by organizing get together
evenings,whole heartedly.
After all, these dear children of Guruji are coming here all the way from
1800 KM, travelling for 32 hours and they are leaving their home for the

What is VFABI
Volunteer for a Better India (VFABI) is a project for making a difference to
our city, Delhi-NCR, our Country and above all to one's self. It is a
Citizen's Action Plan.
Old and young, rich and poor, urban and slum dwellers, school/college
students, Corporate and Business Community, NGOs, RWAs, Hospitals, Leaders
from Art, Culture, Music, Literature, Theatre. all would be encouraged to
give at least One Hour to The Nation!

Our beloved Guruji says "Our first and foremost commitment is to do seva
(service) in the world and be grateful for any opportunity to do the seva."
One of the projects run by Art of Living is providing good quality education
to transform tribes. Sri Sri Vidya Mandir (School project in Ghatshila) is
growing leaps and bounds and as many as 3,000 children are benefited by way
of free education and allied factors.
About 23 students & 5 staff members of this school would be visiting Pune
from 13th-17th January 2013.
These children have prepared enthusiastically to present their skills here.
All are requested to encourage them by organizing get together
evenings,whole heartedly.
After all, these dear children of Guruji are coming here all the way from
1800 KM, travelling for 32 hours and they are leaving their home for the

Subject: Tenali Rama and Secrets of Happiness
Meditation gives you the ability to see things the way they are
Tenali Ramakrishna, fondly remembered as Tenali Rama, was a 16th-century
court poet at the Vijayanagara Empire in India. He hailed from a town called
Tenali. He is remembered even today for his extraordinary wit, brilliance
and wisdom.
What is it that we want in life? We may have a long list ready - ranging
from scoring 100% in the maths exam to learning bungee jumping to getting
our daughter married. However, the ultimate goal of each activity is to
bring happiness. How do we live life happily rather than live life seeking
happiness?
#1: Be Happy, NOW!
Enjoying the gentle sea breeze, lying on a hammock, Tenali Rama's friend
wore a dreamy broad smile on his face.
Tenali : "Why are you smiling all by yourself?"
Friend : "I'm thinking of the day when I will be truly happy".
Tenali : When is that?
Friend : When I can have a house of my own by the sea, a comfortable car, a
healthy bank balance, get married to a pretty girl, have four sons, get them
educated so that they get a good job, earn a lot of money, and… Tenali
(Interrupting) : I get the picture, but what will you do after all that?
Friend : Then I can simply put up my feet and relax and enjoy the gentle
breeze and the sun on my face.
Tenali : But my friend, you are doing that now itself - without having to do
all that hard work!
Have you seen how we normally keep postponing our happiness? For instance,
if you are in school, you think: 'Once I am done with school, I'll be
happy!" Then, it's college, job, and the list goes on. You fulfill one
desire, there is a temporary sense of happiness and even before you know it,
you start looking for happiness in something else - 'If only I find my
ideal life partner, I'll be happy', and then 'If I get promoted, I'll be
happy', and this chain continues.
Happiness is nowhere in the future! Think about it - can you be happy
yesterday or tomorrow? You can only plan for it but you can be happy NOW,
isn't it? How can we be happy and do everything in life rather than do
everything one after the other just to find happiness? Meditation is your
answer. Meditation brings your mind to the present moment where true
happiness lies and gives you the strength to smile every moment.
#2: Be content with what you have
Once Tenali Rama saw a man on the road holding a big round shield over his
head in the direction of the sun. Curious to know what the man was trying to
do, Tenali Rama went up to him and enquired.
Tenali : What are you doing?
Man : I am trying to hide the sun. It is too bright.
Tenali : My friend, why are you troubling yourself so much? I have a simpler
solution to your problem."
Saying this, Tenali Rama picked up a grain of sand in his hand and blew it
into the man's eyes.
Have you seen how you are always running behind desires, hoping that their
fulfilment will bring you happiness? And in this chase, you are unable to
enjoy what you already have. These desires are like the sand particles in
the eye which do not let you perceive the beauty of what you have.
Meditation frees us from this feverishness and washes away these dust
particles. It gives us inner freedom and contentment.
#3: Improve Observation, Perception and Expression with Meditation
Tenali Rama and his wife are deciding on what color to paint their house.
Wife : I want pink!
Tenali : Are you serious? We better leave it white and bright!
Wife : I have made up my mind. I will be happy only with pink.
Tenali (giving her a pair of pink-colored glasses) : Fine. Have it your way.
Wear these glasses and not just these walls, even I will be pink!
What was Tenali Rama thinking? Wearing pink glasses does not make the house
pink.
Stress colors our perception of reality. As a result, we don't see things
the way they are. This often results in misunderstandings and gives rise to
further stress. How does one escape this vicious cycle?
Meditation gives you clarity and the ability to see things the way they are.
Observation, perception and expression, all three improve with meditation.
With fewer misunderstandings and communication gaps, staying happy becomes
easier.
#4: Save your mind at any cost
Tenali Rama and his wife were going to a friend's wedding. His wife wore
her best sari and jewels.
Suddenly from behind, a bullock cart, totally out of control, came rushing
by. Tenali quickly pulls his wife towards himself in an effort to bring her
to safety, loses balance and both of them fall into a pit along the road.
Wife (upset): What do you think you were doing? You spoilt my beautiful
dress! I can't go to the wedding like this now!
Tenali : Well, it's time to buy a new dress then (as he smiles to himself
thanking God that she is safe)!
Have you ever been in situations when you have tried to do good but ended up
doing something unpleasant? Have you noticed that during such times, you end
up feeling bad and blaming yourself? This is because the awareness that at
least your intention was good is not always there. Actions are never perfect
but intentions can be pure. Through meditation, we are able to cognize the
intention and accept the imperfection in the action. This saves our mind and
allows us to be happy, come what may.

Subject: Tenali Rama and Secrets of Happiness
Meditation gives you the ability to see things the way they are
Tenali Ramakrishna, fondly remembered as Tenali Rama, was a 16th-century
court poet at the Vijayanagara Empire in India. He hailed from a town called
Tenali. He is remembered even today for his extraordinary wit, brilliance
and wisdom.
What is it that we want in life? We may have a long list ready - ranging
from scoring 100% in the maths exam to learning bungee jumping to getting
our daughter married. However, the ultimate goal of each activity is to
bring happiness. How do we live life happily rather than live life seeking
happiness?
#1: Be Happy, NOW!
Enjoying the gentle sea breeze, lying on a hammock, Tenali Rama's friend
wore a dreamy broad smile on his face.
Tenali : "Why are you smiling all by yourself?"
Friend : "I'm thinking of the day when I will be truly happy".
Tenali : When is that?
Friend : When I can have a house of my own by the sea, a comfortable car, a
healthy bank balance, get married to a pretty girl, have four sons, get them
educated so that they get a good job, earn a lot of money, and… Tenali
(Interrupting) : I get the picture, but what will you do after all that?
Friend : Then I can simply put up my feet and relax and enjoy the gentle
breeze and the sun on my face.
Tenali : But my friend, you are doing that now itself - without having to do
all that hard work!
Have you seen how we normally keep postponing our happiness? For instance,
if you are in school, you think: 'Once I am done with school, I'll be
happy!" Then, it's college, job, and the list goes on. You fulfill one
desire, there is a temporary sense of happiness and even before you know it,
you start looking for happiness in something else - 'If only I find my
ideal life partner, I'll be happy', and then 'If I get promoted, I'll be
happy', and this chain continues.
Happiness is nowhere in the future! Think about it - can you be happy
yesterday or tomorrow? You can only plan for it but you can be happy NOW,
isn't it? How can we be happy and do everything in life rather than do
everything one after the other just to find happiness? Meditation is your
answer. Meditation brings your mind to the present moment where true
happiness lies and gives you the strength to smile every moment.
#2: Be content with what you have
Once Tenali Rama saw a man on the road holding a big round shield over his
head in the direction of the sun. Curious to know what the man was trying to
do, Tenali Rama went up to him and enquired.
Tenali : What are you doing?
Man : I am trying to hide the sun. It is too bright.
Tenali : My friend, why are you troubling yourself so much? I have a simpler
solution to your problem."
Saying this, Tenali Rama picked up a grain of sand in his hand and blew it
into the man's eyes.
Have you seen how you are always running behind desires, hoping that their
fulfilment will bring you happiness? And in this chase, you are unable to
enjoy what you already have. These desires are like the sand particles in
the eye which do not let you perceive the beauty of what you have.
Meditation frees us from this feverishness and washes away these dust
particles. It gives us inner freedom and contentment.
#3: Improve Observation, Perception and Expression with Meditation
Tenali Rama and his wife are deciding on what color to paint their house.
Wife : I want pink!
Tenali : Are you serious? We better leave it white and bright!
Wife : I have made up my mind. I will be happy only with pink.
Tenali (giving her a pair of pink-colored glasses) : Fine. Have it your way.
Wear these glasses and not just these walls, even I will be pink!
What was Tenali Rama thinking? Wearing pink glasses does not make the house
pink.
Stress colors our perception of reality. As a result, we don't see things
the way they are. This often results in misunderstandings and gives rise to
further stress. How does one escape this vicious cycle?
Meditation gives you clarity and the ability to see things the way they are.
Observation, perception and expression, all three improve with meditation.
With fewer misunderstandings and communication gaps, staying happy becomes
easier.
#4: Save your mind at any cost
Tenali Rama and his wife were going to a friend's wedding. His wife wore
her best sari and jewels.
Suddenly from behind, a bullock cart, totally out of control, came rushing
by. Tenali quickly pulls his wife towards himself in an effort to bring her
to safety, loses balance and both of them fall into a pit along the road.
Wife (upset): What do you think you were doing? You spoilt my beautiful
dress! I can't go to the wedding like this now!
Tenali : Well, it's time to buy a new dress then (as he smiles to himself
thanking God that she is safe)!
Have you ever been in situations when you have tried to do good but ended up
doing something unpleasant? Have you noticed that during such times, you end
up feeling bad and blaming yourself? This is because the awareness that at
least your intention was good is not always there. Actions are never perfect
but intentions can be pure. Through meditation, we are able to cognize the
intention and accept the imperfection in the action. This saves our mind and
allows us to be happy, come what may.

Need of the Hour
India has had a rich heritage. the traditions and values were passed down
the generations through the elders especially in a joint family system where
children had the opportunity to imbibe sanskars from their grandparents.
Today we live in nuclear families. Often both parents are working. The
children spend a lot of time in front of TV, and in the absence of any
credible alternative,emulate what they see. Children and youth today need
value-based leadership. For a nation to develop, economic growth must be
supported by a strong foundation of values.
Bridging the Gap
The Sanskrit word " Sanskar" has many meanings, values, purification,
embellishment, refinement, accomplishment, advise, education etc.. It is
easy to see that sanskars transform children in many ways. By removal of
unwanted things or defects, by nurturing of nascent qualities and by doing
value addition. As in the case of wheat, all these would mean removal of
husk and pebbles, nurturing of nascent qualities through grinding, kneading
and cooking and value addition by adding ghee, sugar and salt. Is it not
just wonderful?.
While schools impart education, children imbibe values from the family and
society. In today's urbanised settings, Sri Sri Sanskar Kendras bridge this
gap.
Sri Sri Sanskar Kendras
Understanding this need, Art of Living has opened centres of learning for
children, called Sri Sri Sanskar Kendra. Once a week, trained senior
citizens with a passion for making a difference, spend an hour and a half
with the children, to inculcate in them the values of caring, sharing,
respect, love and compassion. The sessions follow the guidelines.
• The elders share anecdotes and stories of their lives, which provide
children with an insight into life. It also serves as a step to bridge the
growing gap between elders and the new generation.
• Shlokas or dohas are also discussed. as we know very deep stories and
meanings are hidden behind these simple verses.
• Life stories of freedom fighters, saints and great men are shared for
providing inspiration.
•To exercise the body and improve mind-body co-ordination some yoga, easy
pranayam and old games are being taught.
• Many customs that have become perfunctory in our daily lives have
scientific explanations. In each session, they are left in a wonder with
wonderful explanations. e.g, why do we plant tulsi in the backyard or at the
entrance.
• Children are asked to find solutions to the problems presented thus
enhancing their logic skills.
•Every session includes a Dadi Maa ka Nuska where simple Ayurvedic remedies
and treatments are suggested for common ailments.
As a parent one can ensure that his/her child is getting the right inputs to
make him or her a fine person, who will be happy, who can spread happiness
and be successful.

AGE GROUP (5 to 12 yrs)
Weekly Classes : Every Saturday bet 3 to 4 pm
