Guru Purnima - the Chaos and the Bliss: Part I

The people

-- A three-part article from a devotee at Guru Purnima Celebrations. July
24, 2010.

The frenzy that ensues when one person makes an appearance is
associated more with actors and pop stars than with a Guru. And yet, it's
the Guru that everyone chases and woos in AOLlywood. Every year, on Guru
Purnima, the wariest of us jump in glee at the thought of meeting the Master
on "His" day. And while the uninitiated are trying to decide what to think
of a group of friendly, excited and teary-eyed persons, one thing is clear-
no one can escape the magic of Guru Purnima.

Tomorrow, Guru Purnima celebrations will be held at Hartford,
Connecticut- a little town in the North East region of the United States
that is known more for its insurance companies than paradigm shifters. I am
among the thousands who have decided to attend the event. I have not
enrolled in a course, so my itinerary is pretty open for Gurudev, Seva and
my other favorite
past-time: people watching.

As I write, a wide-eyed blond gasps her way into the hall,
clutching onto what is visibly her first sari. "Is Guruji meeting people?"
I have no idea. All of a sudden, she bursts into tears. "I want to see Him.
I have a problem." From the corner of my eye, I see an Asian couple shifting
around with enigmatic smiles. They want His blessings for marriage. On
another end of the corridor, an elderly Indian couple hold their hands
together in pranaam, saying a silent prayer. They are people from different
ends of the world, from unrelated lives and stories, held together by one
thread- Gurudev.

The Guru has an ability to awaken the devotion that lies deep
within us. However, Guru Purnima brings with it, an uninhibited display of
that devotion. Without doubt, this is the devotee's day. Perhaps, this is
what Brindavan was like, I think. Perhaps the Gopis too tried to prolong
Satsang with Krishna, unwilling to let him go. Perhaps, they too chased him
to the elevator, fighting with one another to be alone with him for even a
few seconds. Perhaps, they too felt that same sudden tug at the heart when
he happened to glance at them. Perhaps.

America is conditioned to think that wild bursts of emotion are
inappropriate. And yet, here I am in Hartford, where weeping and loud
laughing are perfectly normal actions. The hotel staffs look on as voices
ring out:
"Come in. Never mind the incessant beeping. I am sure that the elevator can
hold one more person." People run hither to find chairs for perfect
strangers, or get an energy bar for the hypoglycemic person - Utopia. I know
it's not the same out there in the real world, but then, who's to say?
Maybe this is the real world, and our goal is to make that world real.

While Gurudev's presence is what draws us here in the first
place, the devotees make the experience complete. Around Him is a sea of
love that we can watch for hours. Their priceless expressions of awe and
cheer when He tries on a purple hat, their excitement when Bhanu Didi calls
out "Radhe" in satsang as only she can, their tears of gratitude when He as
much as taps them on the head with a flower- no picture or word can capture
the feeling of devotion that those scenes invoke in one's heart. And it is
as catching as it is beautiful. It is impossible to not be swept away into
Guru-dom amidst this excitement and happiness.

Indeed, this Guru Purnima is as much about the devotee as it is
about
the Guru.

Subject: WHERE THE WAVE MEETS THE OCEAN

Of course the wave and ocean had never been separate. Sometimes the waves
thinks it is separate. But ultimately it realises its true nature.

The seven-kilometer long beach that lies along the Bay of Bengal is
breathtakingly beautiful and is amongst the most pristine and unpolluted
beaches. The scintillating sunrise and the sunset add to the beauty of the
experience. Come let's soak into Gurudev's Knowledge, Lessons from Yoga
Vasishta and satsangs filled with Celestial Nectar bhajans.

A PART -II Advanced Meditation Course with Shri Arunji is being organised at
Gopalpur-on-sea, Orissa. Course Dates from 26th to 29th August, 2010.

Subject: Art of Living Productions need your contribution!

Years of organizing events and contributing to humanitarian projects all
around the world has made us the most powerful and reliable volunteer based
organization in the world today. It is now time that we showcase our efforts
and achievements in the most prominent way.

The Art of Living Productions, launched in January 2010, is set up with a
vision to put Art of Living on the Media map all over the continents.

Keeping up with this vision, we request you to ensure that we are notified
of any event or any relevant pilot service projects that you would have in
your country.

If you have planned something that deserves to be on air, kindly let us know
well in advance so that we could either be there to film it or ensure
someone does the same. Also use your discretion to separate the events that
are really important from those that are not.

At present, we are expanding our network to gain access to all the important
media houses. It would also be great if you could keep your eyes open for
any source of information or contact in a local or a prominent channel in
your country or your city and let us know immediately.

We also request you to send us clips of the work you do there. Interesting
ideas that can be filmed and recorded for further purposes.

Drop us a mail with your ideas and suggestions.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Jai Gurudev
