Subject: Advanced Smart experience at Krugersdorp Prison in South Africa

Dear Art of Living family .....

I would like to share with you a very beautiful opportunity I was given
through Guruji's Grace and Compassion .... I have been unemployed for a
while and was not able to get a job easily .... this was a new experience
for me as we become so accustomed to being given everything at a mere
thought !! This time however, Guruji had a different plan for me which
caused me to doubt myself, Him and it was truly a baptism of fire for me!!
Of course my fellow teachers Christelle, Caspar and Chintz suggested that I
teach in the prisons as there is such a great need for the knowledge at the
prisons. I was resistant and did not heed the call for seva (mistake!!) ...
I finally decided I would teach in the prisons this February when I
approached Chintz for a prison where help is needed. I finally got to teach
at Krugersdorp Prison, where I was featured on a television documentary
called Inspiring Lives Globally with Tiamara Williams from New Zealand .
This will be broadcasted some time next year ... the follow on was a second
course and finally the prison officials agreed to an Advanced course to be
held. This of course was through perserverance and constant propositions
made by Christelle and Chintz. I have to share here below my experience at
the advanced course which I am sure many of us will find inspiring ..... I
found not only was the transformation amongst the inmates phenomenal, I had
also undergone my own transformation for which I will be eternally grateful
to Guruji .... I am now employed and of course marvelling all the time at
the workings of the master ..... Just when u think u have figured HIM out
... He changes the modus operandi!!

The Advance Smart programme was a 5 day programme held at the Krugersdorp
Correctional Services for 68 inmates. The programme was facilitated by
Satish Ramtohul from Maurituis. It was his first ever course to be conducted
in South Africa. We started preparations by making the necessary
arrangements with the prison officials. Once this was granted and the
teacher confirmed, finer details around catering and other logistics were
finalised by Chintz Bhana - our inspiration and guide with the Prison Smart
programmes in South Africa.

The pre-cursor to the first day was meeting with the team a day before to
discuss the roles and responsibilities and understand how it was all going
to fit together. Our main challenge at this stage was to fit 68 inmates into
a room that could only take at most forty participants lying down. Of course
we knew there was a DIVINE plan, but we could not help but speculate how we
were going to get them all into the prison chapel! As if by default I found
myself and another teacher, Ansuya Khoosal taking responsibility for taking
the morning sessions. We knew we would be challenged as this meant we would
need to be up at four in the morning to get to the prison in time to start
the seven-thirty session!!

The first day of the course was chaos!! We arrived at the prison to find
that the venue still had to be cleared out, the inmates had not yet arrived
and we were expected to be done with the morning practices by nine-thirty!!
Surprise, we only started the morning session at eight-thirty, a whole hour
later, which potentially put the entire days schedule off track as we had
planned. We requested the officials to make the recreation room next door
available to us so that we may split the group in two. This request was met
with resistance, so we started with stretches in the chapel with all 68
inmates doing light stretches. By the end of the stretches session we had
the recreation room made available to us(yeay!!). It works so well when you
are in total surrender and just get on with the job at hand.
Breakfast was chaos and everyone tried to find their way through the routine
we needed to master by the next meal. Literally every move had to be
anticipated and carefully planned to work like clockwork, given the tight
schedule we had - we had to get all inmates fed, their laptops (plastic food
containers which resembles a laptop) washed and back into the venue within
half an hour (including going to the loo - only two toilets for 68
inmates!!). Challenges galore!! By lunch time we had caught up with all
the lost time and we were back on track - it was most amazing how it all
worked out. The concerns we had regarding getting the dinner packed was
carefully taken care of by the prison officials getting a team of inmates to
help us with serving and washing up of the laptops. This was amazing!

The remaining days worked like clockwork as the IAHV volunteers, prison
officials and inmates worked with so much cohesion and co-operation between
all concerned(team work). We were truly glad to have the help of Daleen
Kruger (Prison Management) and Welma de Jager (Social Worker) who were
responsible for making the necessary arrangements.

During the sessions, it was so amazing to observe the depth of silence that
could be achieved just within a few rounds of doing hollow and empty
meditations. The inmates' behaviour was very respectful towards all
volunteers. They expressed so much of gratitude for the good food and
attention they were being given as a result of the programme taking place.
Our teacher, Satishji was so patient and at ease which each and every
challenge we were faced with - he conducted himself with such surrender and
evenness. The inmates felt so much of love from him and considered him as a
father figure. There were many curious questions about Sri Sri, how they can
become teachers as well as continuing with this when they were on the
outside.

The most amusing time of the course was when we arrived the morning after
the meditation in motion session to find that a large number of the inmates
had been up since 1 am because they were ill with diarrohea!! They had been
running to the loo all morning. Even during the morning session at any one
point in time there would be at last ten of them outside the class waiting
to the loo. They could not understand what had gone wrong. Fortunately after
some deep long ujjai breathing and pranayamas most of them had settled down
and they were able to do their kriya comfortably!

The experience sharing was so good to hear when they shared the freedom and
lightness they felt. They also looked much more lighter and de-stressed. Not
only were the inmates' lives changed forever, but even as volunteers we felt
the inner transformation that had taken place within ourselves.

The officials of the prison also expressed a keeness to conduct another
advanced programme as there was an increased interest in the programme from
inmates who did not attend this time round. So maybe we will be having more
programmes at the prisons with greater degree of rehabilitation and
transformation taking place inside them.
With Lots of Love,

Shobha Maharaj
