Subject: PrisonSMART in Seattle Jail

Starting regular PrisonSMART courses at Seattle Jail this fall brought a wave
of upliftment for local volunteers, and hope, and relief from negativities in
the lives of inmate participants.

Guruji's Grace led us through every step in this wonderful seva! Miracles,
amazement, suspense, what not... You'll have it all, too, if you get inspired
to start the same thing in your area!

Visualize a big cement box, windows painted over not to allow a sight of sky,
sun, trees, etc; inside it's cold, and the intercom barks demeaning warnings
and orders almost non-stop. This is the course setting. Imagine meditating, and
relaxing there... Yet the participants (minimum security men) in red
short-sleeved pajama outfits report such profound experiences, their
understanding of the knowledge points of the course simply amaze us! Though
most of them are aching from various poor health conditions, they feel
fortunate to attend without being able to take a break during the whole
session. They sit, and do their stretching - not on the cold cement floor - on
yoga mats provided by Seattle Art of Living (through a charity
organization). There is a waiting list for our courses since the room cannot
hold all who want to take them! Quite a few times we would hear a cherished
comment from the inmates: "Probably, I am in here just to take your course..."
And, oh!, so much gratitude is being expressed towards us, and the course!
Hearts open, tears roll, belongingness establishes...

Yes, PrisonSMART opens the door to the Art of Living for a population which,
otherwise, wouldn't come close to this knowledge! And many are so ready, and
appreciative for receiving it! This discovery made the Seattle volunteers
greatly excited about PrisonSMART, and makes the team look forward to each
course, and expanding the program.

After each of the three courses taught at Seattle Jail so far, the participants
filled a questionnaire (developed by David Longnecker). Here is a short summary
of the results that speak for themselves:

Participants reported that their ability to deal with stress, anger, and other
negative emotions in prison life has strongly increased (average 4.4 on the
scale 1 through 5).
no difference
much more able
1_________2_________3________4___X_____5

Their physical condition significantly improved (average 3.9 on the scale 1
through 5).
no difference
much improved
1_________2_________3_______X4_________5

The quality and length of their sleep has strongly improved (average 4.4 on the
scale 1 through 5).
no difference
much better
1________2_________3_________4___X_____5

Participants need fewer medications as a result of taking the course (average
2.5 on the scale 1 through 5).
no difference
taking fewer medications
1________2____X____3_________4__________5

Their ability to feel empathy with the guards has improved (average 3.0 on the
scale 1 through 5).
no difference
much better
1________2_________3__________4_________5

This last point is quite important in promoting this program to prison
authorities.

If you are up to starting something great and useful in where you are, do
PrisonSMART!
