[esatsang] Esatsang digest for July 9 2009

Subject: [Daily Sutra} Applause

If ten thousand people applaud you---so what? You think you will be in their
mind, in their attention, forever? No. You will get big applause, and they
clap, and they go away. And, the same people, some other time may talk ill of
you, too.

Subject: Guru Kripa

How does one promote the Art of Living course on a small island, population of
less than 10,000, which already has every spiritual practice known to man.
Well, perhaps I exaggerate a bit but Salt Spring Island, off the coast from
Vancouver, British Columbia, is known as the Canadian collecting bin of
eclectic spiritual seekers. So just how does one bring the amazing sudarshan
kriya to the attention of those already immersed in Qi Jong, Tai Chi, various
forms of Bhuddism, kundalini yoga, Sufism, etc, etc, etc?

We tried the traditional approach, posters, brochures, mail-outs and a press
release in The Driftwood but Guru-ji had other means up the sleeve of his kurta
as we were to find out. Some time ago, travelling teacher Brij Paul Singh had
met a retired business man, Chris, at the ferry terminal. Chris helped Brij
Paul with his luggage and this led to a three hour discussion on the ferry ride
to Vancouver. Chris became the first one to sign up for the course.

One of the local vortex' for anthropologic cultural researchers on the island
is "The Roco", a local coffee shop. In other words, spend a day there and
you will have met every genre of character known to the social scientist. And
there it was that Elizabeth, Mary and Rudy became acquainted with Sri Sri
through conversations with a total stranger, namely myself. Thankfully, Salt
Spring is still a place where one can have conversations with total strangers.

Then, Brij Paul came to Salt Spring in advance of the course to hold an
information session. We had stopped at the Roco for lunch (great vegetarian
soup) and met with Susan in the washroom line-up. That short conversation and
an exchange of business cards was all it took.

I am a volunteer driver for Salt Spring seniors and received a call to drive a
lady to her doctor's appointment. When I accepted, he said "thank
goodness, I started at A and am now in the S's looking for someone who can
go". Mary (no. 2) was the lady needing the ride and she mentioned that she
was looking for a spiritual practice. What could I do? I had to tell her
about the Art of Living course starting in a week. Mary cancelled her next
doctor's appointment so that she could attend.

Meanwhile, back at the Roco, Leila, a UBC medical student doing a rotation with
a doctor on Salt Spring, was having a coffee and overheard Elizabeth (a former
advertising exec.) and I discussing the best wording for the poster. She asked
what it was about and she became the next participant.

Of course, there were others who signed up through more conventional means, the
urging of friends, yoga mates, wives, etc. And yes, one person came as a
result of our mail out. The course was a wonderful success as the grace of the
master spread to all. Local radio personality Bill Nash came at the end to
record the expressions of the group. These interviews will not be heard on his
radio program as mysteriously, the recorder did not get turned on. But as Bill
says, the words expressed were so profoundly personal and heart felt, it was
better that they be heard only by the divine.

It could be suggested that the above mentioned meetings were the result of
chance and coincidence. But on Salt Spring, hardly anyone believes in
coincidence. As I said, Sri Sri had something else up the sleeve of his kurta.
