Meri Dilli Meri Yamuna is a project for making a difference to Delhi-NCR. It
started as an initiative of The Art of Living, but now, is a full blown
Citizen's Action Plan. Dozens of NGOs and Companies have already joined as
Partners and more are joining. We are in touch with various Government
departments of India, Delhi to join hands and support.
On March 7, Meri Dilli Meri Yamuna will be launched by His Holiness Sri Sri
Ravi Shankar, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and the topmost leaders from all
sections of the society. The objective of this campaign is not only to involve
the public but also sensitize them on the issue of cleaning the Yamuna and our
city.
On the launch of Meri Dilli Meri Yamuna on March 7, 2010 at Delhi over 1 lakh
citizens would be participating. This will be followed by a massive cleaning of
the banks of Yamuna on March 14 by the citizens to demonstrate that 'it is
possible to make a difference'.
We aim to begin with Yamuna first, our sacred river. Yamuna is immensely
important for the economic, ecological and basic needs of the region and its
people – but, over the years, it has become one of the most endangered
waterways in India. The revival of Yamuna will mean a protection of our
heritage and the currently endangered bio-diversity of the eco-system, and will
also be a huge contributor for tourism, a healthier and sustainable urban
environment and a restoration of critical water resources.

We were fortunate to visit some of the tribal schools in Ghatshila in Dec.
2009. The schools are not just beacons of knowledge but life transforming
centers. With each child attaining an education not only is their life enriched
but their future is brighter.
I did not understand the magnitude of the impact these schools were having on
the local communities until I personally witnessed the pride in the students'
faces and the love and care of the teachers. In the middle school, my beloved
papaji (Mr. Brij Chawla), asked the students what traits they admired in a
human being; to which a 12-year-old girl stood up and said, "benevolence".
Imagine a tribal child having such vocabulary in one of the most remote parts
of India.
