Dear Friends,

As the year wraps up, I am remembering how the notion of tithing has come up
several times when we have discussed moving our programs forward to reach
more and more people. While outreach and program development are a huge part
of expanding our impact, seeding our programs each year with donations can
change the game in terms of how our leaders plan investments for the coming
year. Imagine the changes we might make for Project Welcome Home Troops, for
example, if all of a sudden the balance of funds were to double. I don't
think it would be very hard for us to double the budgets that our projects
are working with...if we each consider increasing our giving to a full 10%
of our income, and not just this one time, but on an annual basis. I'm sure
many of us are already doing this...not to mention all the other ways that
we all give, but I still thought it is worth sharing this with you.

As I have shared previously, making this commitment on an ongoing basis
creates a shift in how we think about giving. Instead of thinking "how much
should I give"..."will it be used effectively"..."why aren't others giving
more"...it becomes a simple and joyous process of allocating a set amount of
money across the projects we are most inspired by. Let's say we make $50,000
in the year...then we know we have $5,000 to give. After adding up all the
other donations made during the year till now...perhaps there is still a
ways to go to reach that $5,000. Whatever this amount is - just being
committed to that...without attachment or doership, but from a pure space of
giving, abundance, and gratitude.

In terms of impact...let's imagine there are just 1,000 of us in the US that
have an average income of $100,000 (some may make $30,000...some may make
$300,000) and we all commit to giving 10% each year. That would mean
$10,000,000 per year flooding into the various projects we run without
overburdening anybody. Think of all the work that goes into just one of our
large events where we might raise $1,000,000 - this is 10x that amount on an
annual basis without any incremental work! With these funds, we could open
10x new centers, hire 10x more full time staff/teachers, spend 10x more on
outreach, teach 10x more high school students, or increase spend in any
other way that will help our programs reach more people. Also, now, instead
of us thinking that we are asked so many times to donate (I hear this
sometimes) - we think how we are given so many options with which to
allocate our 10% during each year. We already know we will give 10%.

Jameelah and I have enjoyed this shift in giving, and we just wrapped up our
giving for 2012 in support of some programs that we see are really active
and making an impact. In these times, it is even more important that we
commit to expanding our programs through all the means at our disposal -
including giving.

love that gets distorted into anger and anxiety.

Love is the mother of all negative emotions. All those who lose their temper
are perfectionists. Jealousy is because of love. You love somebody so
jealousy arises. When you love objects more than people that is greed. When
you love yourself too much, that is arrogance. Arrogance is to love oneself
in a distorted manner. Not a single object on this planet wants to be away
from love. Yet we don't want any pain or suffering that comes along with
love. This can be achieved through cleansing and uplifting our spirit, wich
is possible only through spirituality.
