Subject: Bal Chetna Shibirs in 40 Municipal schools of Ahmedabad in one week
More than 50 teachers and 200 volunteers of the Art of Living Ahmedabad
chapter participated in conducting simultaneous Bal Chetna Shibirs of 5 days
each (14th - 18th September 2010) in 40 Municipal corporation schools spread
across the city. The local chapter has already led successful shibirs in the
past years; the highlight this time was that they all were held during the
same time. The results were ecstatically outstanding!!
This was possible only because of the excellent initiative taken by Ms.
Chetanshi Dave with the support of Mrs. Usha Chaturvedi and Mrs. Surekha
Shah and, coordination by Ms. Hemali Shah and Ms. Bhranti Patel.
Around 10,000 kids from the age group of 8-13 years attended the five day
Shibir. These courses are usually conducted to help children in rural areas
be happy and more positive. In the past, these courses have enabled the
children to make the right choices to help them stay in school and keep away
from country liquor and tobacco and helped them achieve their full
potential.
Considering the age group of the participants, the teaching points consisted
of interactive games directed at inculcating and creating awareness about
the basic human values which would encourage them to be better social
beings; pranayamas & meditation to have them experience a peaceful state of
mind; drawing, music and dance recitals to become more self-expressive. It
was simply amazing to see the creative side of these kids.
Every single kid opened up to the individual and group processes, the
teachers leading those sessions witnessed their participation with pure joy.
The children returned to their basic nature which was love, innocence and
happiness thereby bringing sweet tears in the eyes of everyone involved in
these programs.
These Shibirs were only a part of the pilot program in association with the
Municipal School Board of the city. The principals and teachers of the
respective schools were very impressed with the work led by The Art of
Living Foundation. After listening to their experiences shared in front of
the entire team, the heads of the Municipal School Board, Ms. Nalini Poptani
and Dr.
Labdhir Desai sincerely acknowledged the efforts put by all the teachers and
volunteers and, invited the team to do more of these shibirs in the
remaining schools. They realized how much these Bal Chetana Shibirs would
help the school children in future, to be responsible citizens and
successful individuals.
The process of change has begun! Our entire team feels immensely grateful to
Guruji for giving this wonderful opportunity to spread smiles.
Here are some of the pictures: ~
Experience sharing: ~
1) On the fourth day of the shibir, Friday evening, I was transferred a
call in my office from a Muslim parent. He shared that his son came up to
him and his wife that day and touched their feet to do pranam right before
they were sitting for Namaz. It was the first time in their life that this
happened and he was extremely touched with this change in his son's
behavior. He blessed the entire team of Bal Chetna Shibir and the Art of
Living Foundation for the kind of selfless work they were doing for people
of all cultures in the society. ~ Mr. Bharat Ganatra, President of Gujarat
Apex Body
2) I received calls from principals of neighboring municipal schools
that
how come their schools were not selected for such transforming programs.
They showed a lot of interest in having such shibirs for their school
children as well. ~ Dharmisthaben, Principal, Dariyapur school No. 16
3) All the students cleaned the school campus on their own the next day,
they closed their eyes while doing breathing techniques and also appreciated
the roadside sweepers for their work. The sweepers mentioned that they had
never been acknowledged for their work before. Overall, taking these Bal
Chetna Shibir was a very humbling experience for me as a teacher ~
Niveditaji, AOL teacher
4) I felt a lot of peace within me while doing the Ram meditation. All
the
games were a lot of fun as well as learning at the same time. Please keep
coming to conduct such classes. We will miss you. ~ students
